The energy price cap will increase on 1st April

The energy price cap will increase on 1st April 2022.

A few tips:

  1. If you’re on a non-smart prepayment meter, most suppliers have indicated (to be confirmed – see link below) that their customers won’t move on to the new (higher) rate for electricity until the first time they top up after the end of March – so topping up on credit now could effectively delay the price rise for you. Find out more (including which suppliers this applies to) at:

  2. If you’re on a (non-smart) billing account, submit a meter reading on 31st March. This avoids the risk of getting billed based on a estimate that could charge you more at the new (higher) rate than you actually used.
  3. If you’re on a low income, over 65 or experiencing long-term health issues / disabilities, you can get free help & advice from York Energy Advice with maximising your home’s energy efficiency. This can help to reduce your energy use and save money on your energy bills.
  4. Contact us (Citizens Advice York) for a money MOT. We can check for any unclaimed benefits that you might be entitled to and help you look for other ways to save money on your household bills. We can also help if you’re struggling with debt. Our contact details can be found on our homepage.
