Ghost Broking: Is Your Insurance Legit?

Our CEO recently spoke to ITV Calendar news about ‘Ghost Broking’. This is the practice of selling fake insurance (commonly car insurance) – where scammers offer supposedly competitive insurance rates, often online, but don’t give you legitimate insurance in return.

You can find more information about Ghost Brokers on the IFB website.

How do I know if I have been sold legitimate car insurance?

You can do an online check yourself to see if you car is legitimately insured at: https://ownvehicle.askmid.com/

If buying through a Broker, check if they’re registered with the British Insurance Brokers’ Association.

If buying directly from an insurer, check if they’re a member of the Motor Insurers’ Bureau.

If using an insurance / financial adviser, check if they’re registered with the Financial Conduct Authority.

What should I do if I think I’ve been scammed?

You can report insurance fraud to the Insurance Fraud Bureau, or the other organisations listed here.

If you’ve experienced Insurance Fraud and need advice, you contact the Citizens Advice Scams Action service on 0808 250 5050 (freephone, Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) for further advice. There is also some useful information on what to do if you’ve been scammed on the national Citizens Advice website.
